Audience Research: Questionnaire

____________________________________________

THE RESULTS

41 PEOPLE TOOK THIS SURVEY
____________________________________________

A) Male
B) Female

I asked an equal number of males and females to fill out this survey, but requested that they only do so if they felt that music was something very important to them. The fact that more males completed it than females would suggest that my magazine ought to be slightly male-orientated in order to connect with the larger audience.
____________________________________________

A) 10-14
B) 15-19
C) 20-24
D) 25-29
E) 30+

I made sure that people of a wide variety of ages were asked to complete this questionnaire. I can clearly conclude that those age 15-19 are the age group most interested in music and music magazines. This means that my previous plans for target audience were absolutely correct!
____________________________________________

A) Yes
B) No

These results suggest to me that my double page spread should encompass more than just audible music, but also the experiences/people/emotions that create the music and equally important: the experiences/people/emotions that the music creates
____________________________________________

A) Rock
B) Pop/Chart
C) Rnb/Hiphop
D) Alternative
E) Other

As you can see, "Alternative Music" was not as popular as some other genres. Nevertheless, thanks to the "other" option I placed in my questionnaire, I learnt that many of my survey participants like a wide variety of music genres. This was very encouraging to me as I believe that in a way alternative music is often merely an amalgamation of different genres. Another result is "indie" music - which is basically a slightly obscure and watery version of rock - which some people would refer to as alternative.
 ____________________________________________

A) Regularly
B) Occasionally
C) Never

The fact that very few people purchase music magazines regularly is slightly discouraging and has made me realise that my magazine must be something special if it is to appeal to my target audience! Fortunately my next few questions help me understand what I can do to make this happen...
____________________________________________

A) Interesting Cover
B) Featured Bands
C) Posters/Giveaways
D) Other

These results have helped me understand that the band I feature on my cover must (appear to) be the kind of band that fans of this genre would appreciate. I will do so by paying a lot of attention to the minor details of the band such as hair, make up and clothes - all of which help shape the "image" that then shapes the music and the fans. Not only this, but in my contents page I will feature LOTS of interesting sell lines regarding the most interesting and unique alternative artists.
___________________________________________

Question 7
If "Regularly" - Which magazines do you regularly purchase?
  • Q
  • NME
  • Kerrang
(These are the answers written in the response box)
I intend to purchase and analyse copies of each of these magazines, to understand what it is about them that creates a reliable, devoted readership.
____________________________________________

A) Yes
B) No
C) Rarely

This suggests to me that I should not include the petty, minor details of my featured band's lives, but ought to perhaps include key points - focusing mostly on the life experiences that help to shape the music that my readership are listening to.
____________________________________________

A) See photos of the artists youre interested in
B) Read an interview with the artists you're interested in
C) See a balance of the two
D) Other

This specifically helps me understand the kind of picture/text balance to include on my double page spread. I will only use images which are both interesting and relevant to the text. But my key focus will be on providing an interesting text, rather than spending all my time acquiring and photoshopping the perfect alternative band images.
____________________________________________

A) No more than £1
B) No more than £2
C) No more than £3
D) No more than £4
E) No more than £5

This helps give me an idea as to how much money my readership would have to spend, which also helps to solidify my target audience for me.

  1. Sarah,

I am very impressed by your questioning here. audience research is actually quite difficult, many students often ask irrelevant questions.

I like questions 6 and 7 and can clearly see how your feedback from these can be put to good use in the creation of your own music magazine. You make this clear for the reader with your comments in red writing.

    Good work, well done
